Let's all be for real here: I am not a skinny boy. I do realize that I am rather portly. Fat, even. But you know what? That's not a problem. And, for those of you who think differently, please take the time to watch this video. Those who are ashamed of being large, watch this video. Those who have the bandwidth to spare, watch this video.

I agree with what she says. She says the things that I know I want to. I want to stand on top of the fucking world and scream this to anyone who will listen.

Oh god, I absolutely HATE buying clothes.

I would kill to be able to wear Gap or Old Navy or, gods help me, Abercrombie and Fitch...but nope. I have to wear stuff from the George Foreman collection. And while I like his grills I'd rather not wear his clothes.

I have to say though, it's easy for her to talk the way she does because, while she's fat, she's not FAT. I'd love to hear her saying the same things if she were around 300 or so. At least she can go into some of the more normal stores and buy clothes sometimes but if she were heavier she wouldn't be able to at all.

It's a nice message but it's just hard to take to heart.

I don't know if you are a dude, a chick, or an amazing being somewhere else so I can't really totally address your argument on those grounds.

But for chicks, Old Navy is pretty off-limits once you hit about 180. (Which is where I am.) Gap? Even harder. I have found ONE size 18 outfit in Old Navy over the past 4 years, and that wasn't when I was size 18.

On the guy's side, it's different I think because Cory can still walk out with pants he likes; but I'm not able to, and I weigh a lot less than he does. She really can't shop in "normal stores" very much. I mean, hell! I barely can!

Well, I like to think of myself as an amazing being someplace else... But alas, I'm a dude.

Never having been to an Old Navy or Gap I don't know what sizes they go to but I do know that places like Targét and Wal Mart and Kohls usually have sizes that a woman her size could wear. They're not as prevalent, of course, as the smaller sizes, but my mother—a woman of particular girth herself—is able to find most of her clothes there. Lately, however, she buys most of her clothes from Catherine's—a store for big and tall women—but mostly because she works there part time and has a discount.

Otherwise it's the normal type of store she goes into.

Now, me, I require at least a size 42 pant...it's very rare that I find them that large in places like Targét and Kohls and such and if I were to wear pants around my stomach and not under it, I'd be out of luck everywhere but a big and tall store.

Shirts are a completely different matter entirely...I can wear a 2x shirt no problem but I need those pants that go around my stomach to do so otherwise the shirt is waaaay too short. 2xt shirts are a little better but are still too short for me which is why I wear 3xt shirts that I have to get from a big and tall store and find that the collars are generally just a bit too big for me even if everything else fits well.

And this all just goes to reiterate, for me, the fact that I really need to learn how to make my own damn clothes so I don't have to worry about this crap anymore.

At least I don't have to go to a big and tall store to get shoes.

Yeah, I saw this before and while I can dig the tenor of the message, there's a couple of problems with it.

She mentions how diet and exercise are vital, but not many overweight folks actually do any of that.

Oh a few think they do, but everyone I've known who was overweight was so wrong about what they were doing, it was no wonder they remained big.
Of course, they then point to videos like this and think it's okay because they agree with the gist but miss the finer points she makes.

Another problem I had was that she quotes the International Journal of Obesity (of the NEJM). Her quote was misleading. She doesn't say, but I believe it was from a single study done in Australia. You'll note she doesn't mention the hundreds of other studies done that show that excess weight is simply bad for you in more ways than one.
Other than that, I was okay with her rant.

I should repost this too since I'm not a skinny boy myself.

I am a skinny-ish guy. (6' and 180 lbs.), and in all honestly she did not look that big to me.

But size 0 and 00? Is that anorexia?

No, it's not. Sizes 0 and 00 are just that, sizes. As a very small person - [livejournal.com profile] pacman and [livejournal.com profile] colorwhirl I assure you that not all sizes 0 and 00 people are anorexic.

It all depends on the person. If you saw, say, a woman five foot ten and wearing a size 0, didn't eat much and were sickly looking, then yes, I'd say you're probably seeing someone with anorexia.
Now, if you're seeing a four foot ten woman, solidly built but still thin, with a somewhat baggy size 0 outfit and tiny shoes...then you're likely seeing some unfortunate like me who can't find shoes, clothing or furniture that even remotely fits right.

If my fingers would work, it'd come out like this:
As a very small person - pacman and colorwhirl can attest to my non anorexia- I assure you that not all sizes 0 and 00 people are anorexic.
